Karet Residents Use Maggot to Reduce Organic Waste

Locals also develop catfish farming and hydroponic plants

To reduce organic waste and increase economic value, residents living in RW 07, Karet Urban Village, Setiabudi, South Jakarta have adopted maggot cultivation program in Bedeng Park, Jalan Foba RT 01.

According to Hasan Basri, Chairman of RW 07, Karet Urban Village, maggot cultivation on a 100-square-meter land has been conducted since 2020. The maggot material was from the sub-district as much as 10 kilograms.

Pesanggrahan LH Unit Develops Maggot Cultivation

"Locals also develop catfish farming and hydroponic plants," he expressed, Wednesday (12/1).

For the maggot feed, he prepares six kilograms of vegetable and fruit waste every day from residents or the market.

"The results of maggot cultivation are partly used for catfish feed and some are sold," he explained.

Aside that, the maggot cultivation in RW 07, Karet Urban Village got an appreciation from Karet Urban Village Head, Kiki M Akbar. It was because it could solve waste problem in the area.

"By so, we hope more people do the same thing considering it is able to reduce the volume of waste and has economic value," he stated.
